The Ajax EN54 FireProtect (Sounder/VAD) Jeweller Red is a wireless, EN54-certified fire alarm sounder combined with a visual alarm device (VAD), designed to provide loud audible and bright visual warning during a fire. Combining a configurable multi-tone sounder with an EN 54-23 certified LED light beacon, encrypted Jeweller communication and an IP54 rating for indoor and outdoor use, it delivers certified fire signalling as part of a compatible Ajax fire detection system.

Ajax EN54 FireProtect (Sounder/VAD) Jeweller Red Wireless Fire Sounder with Visual Alarm Beacon

The Ajax EN54 FireProtect (Sounder/VAD) Jeweller is a wireless addressable fire alarm sounder combined with a visual alarm device (model FP.54AV.J), developed for use in EN54-compliant fire detection systems. It provides both a high-volume audible alarm and a bright flashing light signal, ensuring fire warnings are clearly perceived — including by people who may not hear an audible alarm alone. Alarm and event data is exchanged with the Ajax control and indicating equipment (CIE) over the secure Jeweller radio protocol.

This device is a signalling device, not a detector — it does not sense smoke or heat. Instead, it annunciates alarms triggered elsewhere in the system, combining sound and light in a single certified unit. Its IP54 rating allows use both indoors and outdoors, making it suitable for a wide range of premises.

Combined Audible and Visual Alarm

The device delivers a fire warning through two channels simultaneously: a powerful acoustic sounder and a bright LED visual alarm beacon. This dual signalling helps ensure the alarm is perceived in noisy environments and by people with hearing impairments, in line with modern accessibility requirements.

Built-In EN 54-3 Sounder

The integrated sounder provides an immediate audible fire warning using a temporal alarm pattern compliant with EN 54-3. It supports 32 selectable tones with a maximum output of up to 100 dB at 1 metre, and volume can be configured to suit the environment.

When multiple FireProtect sounders are installed on the same system, their audible alerts are automatically synchronised so that all devices activate simultaneously, providing a clear, coordinated evacuation signal throughout the protected premises.

EN 54-23 Certified Visual Alarm Device

The visual alarm device (VAD) consists of an LED light frame that flashes to signal an alarm, certified to EN 54-23 — the European standard for visual alarm devices. The beacon flashes at a frequency of 0.5 Hz (a 90 ms flash every 2 seconds), providing a clearly visible alarm indication.

Visual signalling is essential in areas with high ambient noise, in premises used by people with hearing impairments, and wherever building regulations require visual as well as audible fire warning.

EN 54 Certified Fire Signalling

The device is certified under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) to multiple parts of the European EN 54 standard:

• EN 54-3 — fire alarm devices / sounders
• EN 54-23 — visual alarm devices
• EN 54-25 — components using radio links
• EN 54-13 — system compatibility assessment

This certification makes the device suitable for professional and regulated fire installations where EN 54 compliance is mandatory.

Secure Jeweller Wireless Communication

The device communicates with the Ajax CIE using the encrypted, two-way Jeweller radio protocol, with a communication range of up to 1,700 metres in open space to the hub or a compatible range extender.

Jeweller provides frequency hopping, device authentication and block encryption with a dynamic key to protect against interference and spoofing. The device polls the hub at regular intervals, and loss of communication is detected and reported so faults never go unnoticed.

Indoor and Outdoor Use

With an IP54 protection rating, the Sounder/VAD is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation, allowing it to signal alarms on building exteriors, in covered outdoor areas and in demanding indoor environments. It operates across a wide temperature range from −10°C to +60°C.

Long Battery Life

The device is powered by four pre-installed CR123A lithium batteries, providing up to five years of autonomous operation under normal conditions. Batteries can be replaced without tools, and the device includes reverse-polarity protection.

Battery status is continuously monitored and reported to the Ajax app, with early low-battery notifications sent in advance to allow planned maintenance.

Tamper and Sabotage Protection

The device features a tamper button that detects removal from its SmartBracket mounting panel and immediately reports it to system users and the monitoring company as a fault. Device authentication protects against spoofing, ensuring only genuine Ajax devices can be paired with the system.

Quick Professional Installation

The included SmartBracket mounting panel enables straightforward installation without disassembling the device. It can be mounted on a wall (up to 2.4 m) or ceiling (up to 3 m), and an optional lock secures the device so it cannot be removed without a special tool.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

What is the Ajax EN54 FireProtect (Sounder/VAD) Jeweller used for?

It is a wireless EN54-certified fire alarm sounder combined with a visual alarm device (VAD). It provides both a loud audible alarm and a bright flashing light to warn occupants of a fire, and communicates with the Ajax control and indicating equipment (CIE) over the secure Jeweller protocol. It is used to signal fire alarms — it does not detect smoke or heat itself.

Does this device detect fire?

No. The Sounder/VAD is a signalling device only. It annunciates alarms triggered by detectors elsewhere in the Ajax system using sound and light. For fire detection, pair it with FireProtect smoke or heat detectors on the same system.

What does VAD mean?

VAD stands for Visual Alarm Device — a certified flashing light beacon that provides a visual fire warning alongside the audible sounder. It is certified to EN 54-23 and is important in noisy areas and for people with hearing impairments.

How loud is the sounder?

The sounder produces up to 100 dB at 1 metre, using an EN 54-3 compliant temporal alarm pattern. It offers 32 selectable tones and configurable volume, and audible alerts are automatically synchronised across all FireProtect sounders in the system.

Can it be installed outdoors?

Yes. With an IP54 protection rating and an operating range of −10°C to +60°C, the Sounder/VAD is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation, including building exteriors and covered outdoor areas.

Does it need a specific Ajax hub?

Yes. The device requires an Ajax control and indicating equipment (CIE) / hub running an up-to-date OS Malevich, such as the Hub 2 (2G/4G), Hub 2 Plus or Hub Hybrid. Always confirm compatibility using the Ajax compatibility tool before purchase.

How is the device powered?

It operates from four pre-installed CR123A lithium batteries, providing up to five years of autonomous operation under normal conditions. Batteries can be replaced without tools, and status is monitored and reported in the Ajax app with early low-battery notifications.

What colour options are available?

The EN54 FireProtect (Sounder/VAD) Jeweller is available in White, Red and Black under separate article numbers. This product is the Red version (article 118601.279.RD1).
